As we trial varieties and advanced selections we do our best to summarize and share outcomes from these studies. The reports on this page are written by Dr. Barclay Poling and are summarizations of this research at various locations in the U.S. and Canada.

Results of the 2021-2022 Advanced Selection and Cultivar Trial at Cottle Farms, Faison, NC 

In this article, we share an overview of the results of the 2021-2022 trial of the advanced selections from the Lassen Canyon Breeding Program and California Berry Cultivars, as well as cultivars from Lassen Canyon, USDA, and UC Davis. 2020-2021 Flavorfirst + Lassen Canyon Nursery Strawberry Trial Results

Initially published in the July 2021 issue of North Carolina Strawberry Association’s Strawberry Grower Newsletter, in this article, we share a number of important outcomes from a strawberry variety and advanced selection trials conducted in Faison, NC during the 2020-2021 season; including yield, berry weight, brix, and flavor data. Our goal is to identify advanced selections with great potential for the Eastern U.S.

2019-2020 Flavorfirst + Lassen Canyon Nursery Strawberry Trial Results

In this article, we report our findings from a strawberry variety and advanced selection trial at a location in Eastern, NC (Cottle Farms, Faison), over the most recent 2019-2020 season. Our primary purpose for doing this testing program is to identify new varieties and/or advanced selections from various public and private breeding programs in the U.S. that could provide strawberry growers in the Carolinas and other states in the mid-South with an opportunity to replace Chandler and/or Camarosa. Testing the Possibilities - A Preliminary Report on the Performance of Ruby June in Maryland

Will the new short-day strawberry variety, Ruby June, work in more northern growing areas like Maryland?  This appears to be the first official report on the performance of this newer variety from the Lassen Canyon Breeding program in the state. Final Data from the 2020 Strawberry Variety and Advanced Selection Trial in Faison, NC

Data from the top twelve (12) advanced selections and varieties present in our 2020 variety trials in Faison, NC, including a special focus on the new University of California cultivar Royal Royce. Report includes total yield, marketable yield, % cull, and average berry weight, and comments on flavor.
